Hazardous

Many materials used in the home and garden are considered household hazardous waste and must not be thrown into the trash. They can cause serious safety and health problems in transportation or disposal facilities. Household hazardous wastes include the following:

  • Automotive Products (antifreeze, transmission & brake fluids, batteries, used oil)
  • Cleansers (oven cleaners, toilet cleaners, disinfectants, drain cleaners, rug & upholstery cleaners, bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, abrasive cleaners & powders)
  • Floor and furniture polish
  • Gasoline / Kerosene
  • Old Chemistry sets.
  • Paints and paint related products (stains, turpentine, thinner, rust protectant)
  • Pesticides, herbicides, insecticides
  • Photographic chemicals
  • Pool chemicals

These items must be dropped off at the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility. The Authority is located at 1229 Harrisburg Pike and there is no charge to homeowners for this service.  Click HERE for more information.
